I agree for the most part -- especially if you replace the word "many" in your first sentence with "all."

Especially since I saw some fantastic PITBs in the 80's and I mostly avoid 76-79. There was a raw "something" missing from much of those years.

Playin is a song that was great throughout most of the band's time touring. I just think that the best ones happened during 1972-74.

Agreed about the 72-74 range. Just not the entire 70s

I don't find too many compelling versions of PITB from '76-'79 myself, though I haven't heard them all. The best, far and away, are '72-'74, when there was nary a disappointing version in sight; however I do find many from the '80s and even a couple from the '90s to be quite satisfying.
